MJ Johnson

When did you first start coming to Redeemer Fellowship?
Right from week 1! 🙂

What is your or your family’s favorite spot in Newark? (Restaurant/park etc)
I really enjoy walking around campus, especially on the Green. There’s also a trail behind my apartment complex that is great for running, and White Clay Creek trails are nearby as well.

Are you a Blue Hen (did you graduate from UD)? Yes/No If not, where did you graduate from?
Yes

What is your comfort food during a global pandemic?
Arepas! They are fat little pancake-like patties made with PAN flour, salt, cheese, and butter. They’re DELICIOUS, especially with bacon on top.

How and when did you become a Christian?
I got saved at a young age; I don’t remember exactly when. I grew up with Christian parents and went to church regularly, but for a time right as I was leaving high school, I sort of abandoned living for God and didn’t go to church for a long time. I felt overwhelmed by guilt for how I was living, and the relationship I was in at the time separated me from my friends and family. I was depressed and didn’t know who I was. But one day a couple of years ago, I heard a song by Third Day whose lyrics talked about how God would do anything just to be with me because he loves me. And at that moment I FELT God’s love for what felt like the very first time. I knew I had made mistakes and I was scared of surrendering my life to him again, but the CERTAINTY that he loved me made me want to change. It doesn’t matter if I sin. It doesn’t matter what mistakes I’ll make in my future. God will never be disappointed in me because he loves me, and because he died to bring me to himself. That one moment completely changed my life. I am the happiest I’ve ever been, safe in the knowledge that I am loved by God.

What is your favorite bible verse or biblical truth?
It has been Psalm 73 for a long time, but now Romans 8 (the whole chapter!) is a close second. I can’t help but feel stirred by the expression of God’s love for us.

What do you love about being a part of Redeemer?
I love feeling like I belong somewhere. Having been away from a church family of my own for a long time, it’s so incredible to be a part of a church that genuinely cares for me, and where I can freely love God and serve other people.

What is your favorite childhood memory?
The year that it snowed on my birthday in early January, and all my friends slept over and we sledded down my family’s hill the next day <3

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten? Did you like it?
Someone let me try 90% dark chocolate. It was disgusting. I regret it so much.
